Learn to Natural Dye at Free Verse Farm

I have teamed up with Free Verse Farm to bring you the ultimate summertime natural dye experience!

In this class you will learn the basics of natural dyes in the most beautiful mountainside setting! We will be using an assortment of dyes—many of them grown and harvested in the very hillside we are located. Free Verse Farm & Apothecary grows a wide variety of culinary, medicinal, and tea herbs which they use as the main ingredients in their ever-expanding line of herbal tea blends, culinary blends, and herbal remedies and body care products. This season, they will also be growing organic natural dye plants exclusively for Earthen Warrior.

We will dye over a fire pit amongst the flowers, herbs, butterflies and bees. You will learn all about which fibers you can use to dye, how to make bright, saturated color that lasts, and you will get to experiment with a range of colors to create a natural rainbow. We will use flowers and dye grown on the farm, as well as exotic natural dyes, medicinal plants, and common food waste. You will leave class with your own color swatches, a silk scarf, and a cotton tote.

For people traveling from further away who may want to stay over on this stunning property and make a weekend of it, you can camp for $35 a night. The campsites offer a hot outdoor shower & sink, as well as an outhouse with a composting toilet, fire pits, and picnic tables. From the Hipcamp listing: “The property boasts twenty sloping, knoll-laden, open acres overlooking the First Branch of the White River as it passes through the scenic village of Chelsea, Vermont. We have incredible views, forest trails that offer magical woodland wanderings, and a wide range of campsites available in our fields.”

JUEL-Natural Dye Class

JUEL-Natural Dye Class

At this witchiest time of year, there is no better activity than gathering around a cauldron and brewing up a pot of natural color! As nature starts to make its annual descent into darkness, and the leaves and plants fall away, in many spiritual traditions it is called “the thinning of the veil” when the veil between the material and spirit realm is thin. This can be a hard time of year for some, as we see things die away and winter’s chill begins to make itself known. But it can also be a sacred time when you may use the transformations you see in nature, and the spirit world being so close, as a time of beautiful metamorphosis. In this vein, we will turn plants into beautiful pots of color that can then turn a textile into a sacred object. You can wear and use this textile through the winter to remind you that nature will bloom and grow again next spring.

This class will take place in White River Jct, Vermont at Juel Modern Apothecary.

In this class you will learn to dye textiles using natural sources: medicinal flowers and plants, food waste and roots, berries and leaves! The plant world is a magnificent resource for natural dyes, and this includes the plants we see in our backyards and foods regularly consume right in our own kitchen!

We will make deep reds from Mexican cochineal, yellows from onion skins and turmeric, peachy pinks from avocado pits, purples from red cabbage, poke berries and flowers, and blues from black beans. From all of these colors you can make a whole rainbow! This is a wonderful class if you have been interested in natural dyeing and wanted to learn a bit more. Beginners welcome. We will go over how to prepare a textile for dyeing, the whole dye process, and after care. You will receive a document with instructions after the class for experimenting on your own.

We will provide you with a few strips of prepared textiles to experiment with and your own tote bag! You are welcome to bring old linens or garments to experiment with as well (they must be white and a natural material—not polyester). This will be a fun evening of learning, experimenting, and playing with natural color!

Natural Dye Class at Paper Fashion Studios

This natural dyes class is in the heart of NYC, but you will feel like you've been transported to another world. Join Paper Fashion founder Katie Rodgers, and Earthen Warrior founder Susanna Taylor for an afternoon of reveling in natural colors, sipping cocktails, delighting in the late September air, and creating your own one-of-a-kind naturally dyed objects. Choose from a combination of tote, silk pillowcase, and silk scarf that you can take home and use and wear.

This event will take place on the gorgeous garden terrace at the Paper Fashion studio on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.

You will learn about the art of natural dyes from Susanna, who has studied from masters in New York City and as far away as the Amazon jungle and deep in the mountains of Oaxaca, Mexico. She will teach you how to prepare your fabric for dyeing and how to make a natural dye pot. You will create a rainbow of color from the natural world. You will learn a lot and get to take home a beautiful piece of wearable art! You will also get to tour the Paper Fashion studios. You may bring other pieces of fabric or clothing you wish to dye (natural fibers only).

Susanna and Katie are both creatives living in NYC. They run very different kinds of businesses, but both share a love of nature, fashion and beautiful, colorful things.

Susanna started Earthen Warrior as a way to create beautiful garments (and sleep masks!) that are ALL GOOD. Her products are good for the earth and good for the consumer-- from the design, production, dye and marketing of the product.

Katie created Paper Fashion as a way to share her vision of the world through her art and lifestyle; a promotion and enjoyment of the simple moments in life. Celebrating nature, fashion, women, and art, Katie has collaborated with brands such as Cartier, Christian Louboutin, Estee Lauder, Harper's Bazaar, Nespresso, Winsor & Newton, among others.
